The new 1oz Silver Krugerrand is a celebration of the first-ever bullion coin from 1967: the original gold Krugerrand from the Rand Refinery in South Africa. Introduced as a 50th-anniversary special in 2017, the sixth silver edition of this iconic coin has quickly evolved into an essential collector’s item. With a face value of R1 (1 Rand), the 2023 1oz Silver Krugerrand coin is legal tender in its home country and works as an affordable starting point for bullion investing enthusiasts. 

Made from 99.9% pure silver, it features the original design with a prancing springbok and a bust of South African icon Paul Kruger, from whom the coin gets its name. The 2023 1oz Silver Krugerrand coins come in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and get their lustrous finish from a single press strike. The coins are packaged in multiples of 25 into Krugerrand tubes. 20 of these tubes are put together in a monster box, containing a total of 500oz silver.

Embrace heritage with a classic image of South Africa’s national animal: the springbok antelope. Designed and engraved by renowned sculptor Coert Steynberg, the animal can be seen prancing around in the ‘veld’ of its homeland set in a subtle decorative frame. Other design elements include the ‘Krugerrand’ title, the year of issue, content details (in Afrikaans and English), weight and denominational value.

The coin pays tribute to South African statesman Paul Kruger. The final president of the former South African Republic was the face of the Boer resistance against British rule in the Transvaal. Kruger also established the South African Mint responsible for minting the Krugerrand coins and more. His bust is surrounded by 200 serrations, alongside a striking embossment of South Africa in both Afrikaans and English. 

The South African Mint serves as the primary producer of coins for the South African Reserve Bank. Situated in Centurion, Gauteng, close to the administrative capital, it manufactures coins and planchets for both domestic and international markets. The Mint was set up by Paul Kruger in 1890 after the discovery of gold in the South African Republic and the Witwatersrand Gold Rush.

Thanks to The South African Mint, the gold market experienced a revolution in 1967 with the introduction of the original Krugerrand. By 1980, it accounted for nearly 80% of worldwide gold sales, cementing South Africa as the global leader of the precious metals industry. To date, the Mint has produced over 50 million Gold Krugerrands and counting.
